Minister of Economy announces the creation of the Customs Administration to attend to operations in the Chancay megaport

The Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista Arbildo, announced the creation of a Customs Administration in Chancay that will address the needs that will arise from the new operations of the megaport. Likewise, he maintained that the Provincial Municipality of Chancay will have a new source of income that would be 2% of Customs collection.

Arista Arbildo highlighted that the main task for the new SUNAT administration is to improve collection during 2024. “As a goal we established increasing collection by one percentage point of GDP, recovering part of the two points that we lost during 2023. I am I am sure he will achieve it,” he said.

He also specified that the MEF has raised the urgency of modernizing the Tax Court, because it is useless to have a very efficient Superintendency, when the termination resolutions are claimed in the Tax Court and the collection process cannot continue. “There are things to correct, and that is why modernization is necessary,” he said.

Regarding the simplification of tax regimes proposed by the Executive Branch and sent to Congress, he maintained that this proposal is being submitted to the analysis of international organizations, with the aim of achieving a greater consensus of opinions.

“The important thing in this proposal is that the expenses of small and medium-sized businesses will also be considered as deductions for the payment of their income tax. That didn’t exist before. “This is a bet to encourage the formalization of companies and reduce informality,” he noted.

Finally, he reiterated the Government’s interest in creating a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the small north driven by the economic activities generated from the Chancay megaport.

“Possibly, looking at that model, we will make more SEZs in other places in the country where we have the potential to create large ports. That is the trend worldwide. To do this, we are going to develop a sufficient legal framework throughout the year,” he stressed.
