Minister of Defense Reveals Details of Military Aid to Ukraine

“I think that only children who do not watch television did not understand that we were exporting ammunition to Ukraine, due to the policy imposed in front offices, this was done semi-secretly, which also required the presence of intermediaries. My policy, my understanding at the moment is that when our allies buy armaments and ammunition from Bulgarian enterprises, and use intermediaries they have chosen, whom they trust, it will continue in the same way”.

This was stated by the Minister of Defense Todor Tagarev to BGNES.

“Then when it comes to sales that are with Ukrainian funding for the Ukrainian army, then we will try to work directly, without intermediaries, because the involvement of intermediaries always puts us in a gray area, which in itself creates risks Tagarev added.

“The president and I are bound by law and constitutional order to work together on key issues for our defense. Institutional interaction is of critical importance for the good development of our defense,” said Tagarev.

He said the aid to be provided to Ukraine does not include aviation and armored vehicles, declining to comment further on the matter as the list is confidential.

Regarding the desire of VMZ-Sopot to expand its production capacity for the production of ammunition 155-mm projectiles (NATO standard), Tagarev explained that there is full understanding from the cabinet and the process of concurring a decision of the Council of Ministers for inclusion is underway in this initiative.

The IC adopted a new package of military aid to Ukraine

The Minister of Defense pointed out that since we do not have 155 mm ammunition and we do not have such weapons, it is a matter of modernizing our production capacity.

Tagarev described this as extremely important, since the army itself has plans to move to the NATO artillery standard.

“And in this way, also using European funding, we will create a capacity that will be used for ammunition for our army, and at the same time it will contribute to our defense industry maintaining its high competitiveness in this niche that we have from decades of inherited specialization”, emphasized Tagarev.

He explained that Ukraine needs many things, from fighter jets and other warplanes to bandages for the wounded.

“It may turn out that Ukraine operated with F-16 before us,” Tagarev pointed out.

The Minister of Defense is adamant that we give Ukraine help without violating the norms for maintaining stocks for a crisis and the most severe situation, and we leave the possibility for normal training and combat training of our army.

He is of the opinion that we should not risk seeing what will happen without support for Ukraine, reiterating that his principled position is that bringing in a whole series of intermediaries leads to risks, and from the point of view of the Ukrainians, leads to raising the price of everything they buy from our defense industry.

In connection with the structure that will fight against disinformation, Tagarev said that he has assigned to think about a concept that will be discussed and thought about how it will be implemented.

“So far, three ambassadors, very serious allies, have expressed their willingness to help us build the capacity to counter disinformation and enemy propaganda,” Tagarev announced.
