Minister of Culture dismisses Hungarian National Museum director over LGBTQ exhibition

On Monday, the Minister of Culture, Jānoš Čaks, dismissed László Simon, the director general of the Hungarian National Museum, from his job. He is accused that the museum did not restrict the entry of underage visitors to the exhibition World Press Photoin which Filipino photojournalist Hanna Reyes Morales’ five photographs feature elderly members of the LGBT community, according to Reuters.

In October, the extreme right party Our country (Our Fatherland) held a press conference in the parliament called LGBTQ propaganda in the Hungarian National Museum. The party’s member of parliament, Dora Duro, expressed the opinion that the works displayed in the exhibition are harmful to minors and violate the ban on showing material to minors that “propagates homosexuality and genderism” set out in Hungary’s 2021 Child Protection Act.

L. Simons has indicated that the museum has placed a restriction on exhibition visitors under the age of 18 on its website, but the control of visitors’ identification documents is not within the competence of the museum.

The BBC reminds that in the summer the Hungarian authorities imposed a fine of 12 million forints (31.7 thousand euros) on a bookseller Lira Retail Kft., because it sold a book without a closed package Heartstopper, which depicts two teenage boys falling in love with each other. The screen adaptation of the book is visible Netflix.
