Minister: no more naked photos from patient to health insurer

In some cases, insurers require this, for example if there is a considerable period of time between the treatment and the repair operation. Health Minister Ernst Kuipers reports to the House of Representatives that he wants to change the procedure for this.

mutilated breasts

The Chamber had requested the cabinet to stop this practice through a motion by PVV MP Fleur Agema. The reason was a woman who had complained about photos she had to send of her mutilated breasts in order to be eligible for reimbursement for the reconstruction.

Minister Kuipers wants this to be done only through medical photos taken by the attending physician and ‘exchanged between the healthcare provider and the health insurer via the secure environment for medical information that is available for this purpose’. The assessment of the photos is also done by doctors, according to the minister.

breast reconstructions

He understands that health insurers want photos to be able to assess whether breast reconstruction is requested from a medical point of view. This is reimbursed and cosmetic breast operations are not. Each year, approximately two hundred to three hundred breast reconstructions are requested, which are requested well after treatment for breast cancer.

At the same time, the minister wants to change the entire procedure for recovery treatments. For example, as far as Kuipers is concerned, authorization would no longer be necessary for the majority of breast reconstructions following the treatment. That saves about 5000 applications per year. A separate code could be entered for this.
