The Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, visited the central offices of the General Treasury of the Republic (TGR) located in Santiago, to express his gratitude on the occasion of the celebration of the 97th anniversary of the institution.
There he personally greeted the officials, headed by the General Treasurer of the Republic, Hernán Nobizelli. He also greeted the institution’s top management, as well as the leaders of the Treasury Employees Association (AET), who were in the central hall of TGR, celebrating the anniversary.
In his brief speech, Minister Marcel referred to the historical trajectory of TGR, highlighting the key role it plays in the administration of the Public Treasury and in the distribution of State resources to implement social policies.
“The General Treasury of the Republic is part of the institutions that were created during a period of major reforms in Chile, a period in which the Central Bank, the Internal Revenue Service and the General Comptroller of the Republic were created.” He explained that this period of great political and social upheaval (1920s) resulted in many institutions that endure to this day and are now on the verge of turning a century old.
He added that “recognizing the role of the Treasury is very important, because in doing so we reflect how these institutions have developed over time and how each one has been able to take on new challenges as the economy, technology and society advance.”
He then said that TGR has made many advances and many challenges underway, especially in the technological field and in the development of new channels for serving users and taxpayers. Regarding this last challenge, Minister Marcel highlighted that in the measurements of user satisfaction, two thirds of the people surveyed gave it a score of 6 and 7.
COLLECTION, DISTRIBUTION AND CUSTODY
Marcel also highlighted the role of the Treasury in the collection and enforcement of taxes and other fiscal obligations, as well as in the issuance of public debt instruments. He added that, in relation to the pension reform, for example, people ask “how the collection of pension contributions could be improved and people quickly turn their attention to the Treasury, because when we ask ourselves who has the greatest capacity to collect here in Chile, who has the processes, the experience and the powers, the answer is the Treasury.” Therefore, he stressed, “it is something we should be proud of.”
“The General Treasury of the Republic not only has 97 years of history, but also has many years of future ahead of it,” said the authority.
On behalf of the Institution, Nobizelli thanked Minister Marcel for his presence, “on such an important date for us and for the country, because throughout its history TGR has efficiently and responsibly fulfilled the legal mandate of managing the financial resources with which the State operates.”
Treasurer Nobizelli stressed that the basic functions of collecting, distributing and safeguarding the resources of the Public Treasury are carried out by the Treasury with the support of its 2,000 officials, distributed from Arica to Porvenir, “who carry out their tasks with a high ethical standard, a spirit of public service and great professionalism.”
