Lower Saxony’s European Minister Birgit Honé (SPD) welcomed the proposed emergency measures by the EU in the event that the Brexit negotiations fail. They are limited in time and mainly concern the maintenance of air and road traffic and the access of European and British fishermen to the respective fishing grounds. “With this, the EU is creating clarity for the Lower Saxon deep-sea fishermen. Lower Saxony will continue to campaign for an ambitious fisheries agreement with the United Kingdom,” said Honé on Thursday.

Lower Saxony is well prepared for Brexit. “Nevertheless, I call on companies in particular to review their contingency plans for an unregulated Brexit and, if necessary, to intensify them. Even if a negotiated solution is reached at the last minute, there will inevitably be negative effects on trade,” said Honé.

The European Commission presented emergency measures in the event that there is no agreement on January 1, 2021. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave the negotiating teams until Sunday evening to come to an agreement. “The negotiations are still ongoing, but the end of the transition period is near,” wrote von der Leyen on Twitter. There is no guarantee of a contract. “We have to be prepared – also for the fact that no contract will be in force on January 1st.”
