Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb announced yesterday that catering establishments with a night exemption may remain open on Friday evening. The relaxations will take effect on Saturday at midnight. That would mean that pubs that are allowed to be open into the night would have to close their doors for two hours at 10 p.m.

“I communicated with the mayors about this. I said that it is of course a local decision, but I understand very well that there is tolerance between 22:00 and 00:00. That the catering industry bridges that period,” says Grapperhaus.
The minister has also passed this on to the leadership of the police. “I have noticed that there is understanding,” said the minister. “We are of course a country where we occasionally tolerate something,” says Grapperhaus.
Pretty happy
That is why he fully understands that the municipality of Rotterdam has decided not to enforce the rules on that point on Friday evening. However, he emphasizes that it is a ‘local decision’ and that it may turn out differently in other places.
Grapperhaus says about easing the measures. “I think people are quite cheerful, we can already see that. People enjoy it, but do so in moderation and with measures.”
