The countdown starts for petrol and diesel cars in Italy: the Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility Enrico Giovannini confirmed that our country will bid farewell to cars with traditional engines by 2040.
Host of the TechTalk broadcast to talk about technology, innovation and the future, the Minister Giovannini he expressed himself thus on petrol and diesel cars: “In the Government we are still thinking, there are countries in northern Europe that have set the limit to 2030, while others to 2040. In July, the indication by the European Commission will arrive. We will decide soon, but I would say that 2040 is a deadline ”.
For the first time, therefore, the Minister has indicated a certain date for the start when the Italian mobility will be alone electric: 2040. Giovannini declared that from this point of view “The manufacturers are on our side and are accelerating a lot” so that we move to the new zero emissions era.
Subsequently, Enrico Giovannini also announced the arrival of new state incentives to renew the very old fleet of cars in our country: “We have to renew the fleet – explained the Minister – because it is very old and with many disused cars”.
L’Italy it is therefore ready to align with the Europe’s proposal on stopping petrol and diesel cars. The EU commission, in fact, on July 14th will present a proposal to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. As soon as the motion is presented, the ball will pass to the European Parliament and the EU Council: if the dialogue is successful, yes it will witness the “retirement” of cars equipped with traditional thermal engines.
The idea of fully marrying electric mobility, abandoning diesel and petrol cars, has made its way into the hearts of many European countries. In Spain, for example, there is a plan in place that it will put in place endothermic cars are banned by 2040. The UK, on the other hand, aims to reach this milestone even earlier and has set the date for 2030.
Of course, the car manufacturers have also been moving for some time to fully embrace zero-emission mobility. One of the most active from this point of view is Audi which has confirmed the stop to diesel and petrol engines from 2023: the House of the Four Rings will produce exclusively full electric models.
