Minister Gilmar Mendes Grants Injunction Replacing President of Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF)

São Paulo – Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), granted an injunction replacing Ednaldo Rodrigues as president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). He thus suspends the decision of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (TJ-RJ), which in December had removed the top hat for administrative reasons. The case will still have to go through the Court’s plenary session.

In his decision, the rapporteur said he saw “an obvious danger of harm”. In this sense, he mentioned the possibility of not registering Brazil in the Pre-Olympic Tournament, which will be held from the 20th, in Venezuela. The deadline for registering players and coaching staff is tomorrow (5).

Gilmar was awaiting statements from the new Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, and the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, to make his decision. He is the rapporteur for the PCdoB action, presented shortly after the removal of the CBF president by court decision.

The party saw the risk of sanctions on Brazilian football, including absence from this year’s Olympics, which will be held in Paris. This is because the intervenor’s acts would not be recognized by FIFA and Conmebol, the world federation and South American confederation of the sector.
