Minister Duclos wants to support the proven health care network in Ukraine

OTTAWA — Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos has pledged to elicit support from his international colleagues for Ukraine’s health care system, which is under enormous pressure because of the war.

Mr. Duclos wrote a letter to his Ukrainian counterpart, Dr. Viktor Liashko, to assure him that Canada will put pressure on its allies to support the reconstruction of the health care network in Ukraine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday it had verified more than 200 health facilities targeted by Russian attacks.

Mr. Duclos assures that Ukraine has the support of Canada during the meeting, this week in Berlin, of the health ministers of the member countries of the G7, then next week in Geneva, during the 75th World Health Assembly , the decision-making body of the WHO.

The Canadian minister also told his Ukrainian counterpart that he would co-sponsor his resolution to highlight the importance of protecting health personnel, medical aid and health infrastructure in Ukraine.

While Canada has already provided health services and aid to Ukraine, Duclos admits it needs to do more.
