The applications for 31 new schools have been approved by Minister Wiersma (Primary and Secondary Education). He reports to the House of Representatives that it concerns 25 primary schools and six secondary schools.
In a number of cases, this involves the privatization of existing locations. The new schools may open their doors in August next year. Ten applications have been rejected and the number of new schools admitted is slightly lower than last year.
Prohibition of reward
Decisive for the decision whether a school’s application is approved are the expected quality of the education and the interest among parents and students. For the last ‘foundation round’, the ban on offering a reward for issuing parent statements applied for the first time.
That was previously allowed, but according to Wiersma, such a reward is “very undesirable” and a promise to give money automatically leads to an invalidation. The quality test by the Education Inspectorate has also been tightened up in the new procedure. The Inspectorate has issued several negative recommendations, for example if the plans for citizenship education were not sufficient.
