It is important that a safe and effective vaccine against bluetongue serotype 3 becomes available as soon as possible. Hopes were initially pinned on the vaccine from South Africa. Given the risks associated with this vaccine and the experts’ conclusion that vaccination shortly before winter will have little effect on the number of infections, Minister Adema of LNV has decided not to grant permission to use this vaccine in the Netherlands at this time. . The minister writes this to the House of Representatives.
Adema believes it is of the utmost importance that a safe and well-functioning vaccine becomes available, preferably for the coming midge season, and is fully committed to the development of a European vaccine. Discussions are ongoing with pharmaceutical companies that have experience with vaccines against bluetongue viruses. This is done together with other Member States that are already infected or are at risk of infection.
