The Government will present a package of legislative proposals that seek to reduce impunity around the crime.

In order to speed up investigations against delinquency and organized crime, the Ministry of the Interior (Mininter) will present a package of legislative proposals that allows the national police to initiate investigations into the case without waiting for the arrival of representatives of the Public Ministry.

“Within a few days we are going to present a package of amending regulations so that the police can also be granted the possibility of carrying out the investigation and prior actions (to find those responsible for a crime before the prosecution takes action on the case)” , reported today the head of the Ministry, Vicente Romero.

This means that “when the police receive a complaint or capture someone, they can immediately investigate, not wait for the prosecutor to arrive,” he explained in an interview with RPP.

The minister regretted that when the crime is prosecuted “there is a period, sometimes a delay, due to the non-presence of the prosecutors” that slows down the resolution and punishment of crimes, “because we understand that they do not have much staff.”

“There is a vacuum where investigations are often paralyzed and lawyers take advantage. There is a revolving door and impunity”.

Vicente Romero announced that the package of legislative proposals will seek to amend the rules that currently prevent the police from initiating ex officio investigations that find those responsible for the various crimes that are committed in the country.

The Public Ministry is the autonomous body of the State whose main functions are the defense of legality, citizen rights and public interests, the representation of society in court, for the purpose of defending the family, minors and incapable and social interest.

The Prosecutor is the representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the entity that is the one that leads the criminal action and holder of the criminal action. He acts ex officio, at the request of the victim or by police notice. He is the one who leads the investigation of the crime from the beginning.
