Mining gold from smartphones in private proved economically meaningless

A Weibo user by the nickname Chef Alchemist decided to check out how profitable the business of mining gold from smartphone printed circuits is. As part of the experiment, the man bought 210 cards from mobile devices. The cost of a table was 1.5 USD.

Details

Chef Alchemist used a variety of chemicals to extract gold from printed circuit boards, including acids. The extraction of the precious metal was carried out using procedures such as purification, dissolution, filtration, etc. From 210 tables a Chinese enthusiast managed to extract 0.41 g of the precious metal. The cost of mined gold does not exceed 30 USD.

The experiment showed that the cost of the boards is ten times higher than the value of the precious metal contained in them. Don’t discount chemical reagents, which also come with a certain cost.

According to the online publication MyDrivers, the business of mining gold from mobile devices can become profitable with the large-scale recycling of printed circuit boards. They calculated that 15 kg of palladium, 34 kg of gold, 350 kg of silver and 16 tons of copper could be mined from 1 million smartphones.
