Minimum wage in 2021

In 2021, a minimum wage increase is being prepared, the question is how big. The government will discuss the bill on Tuesday. These rates may not be lower than those presented to the Social Dialogue Council, i.e. PLN 2.8 thousand. PLN gross in the case of the minimum wage and PLN 18.30 as part of the minimum hourly rate.

The agenda of the Tuesday meeting of the government included an item regarding the draft regulation of the Council of Ministers on the amount of the minimum remuneration for work and the amount of the minimum hourly rate in 2021.

The minimum wage goes up, but by how much?

A month ago, this draft was published on the website of the Government Legislation Center. According to it, from next year the minimum wage will be PLN 2.8 thousand. PLN, and the minimum hourly rate is PLN 18.30. These are the same rates that the government previously proposed to the Social Dialogue Council (RDS).

Currently, the minimum wage is 2.6 thousand. PLN, and the hourly rate PLN 17. The government estimates that around 1.7 million workers will benefit from the new regulations, and they will be paid at the level of the minimum wage. The effects of the changes will also be felt by employers who will incur higher costs of payment of wages. It is estimated that this will apply to approximately 2 million employers, including approximately 1.8 million micro-entrepreneurs.

The government’s proposal regarding the minimum wage was dealt with by the Social Dialogue Council, but the social side did not manage to reach an agreement. In this situation, in accordance with the regulations, these amounts are determined by the Council of Ministers by way of a regulation by September 15 this year. (the rates may not, however, be lower than those previously presented to the Social Dialogue Council for negotiations).

The promises are unlikely to come true

PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński announced before last year’s parliamentary elections that the minimum wage would be raised to 3,000. PLN at the end of 2020 and up to 4 thousand. PLN at the end of 2023. The authors of the draft admit that the current assessment of the impact of increasing the minimum wage to 2.8 thousand. PLN is difficult due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Forecasts regarding the unemployment rate in 2021 presented by national and international experts indicate that the epidemic effect will be felt primarily in 2020, and in 2021 the situation should stabilize or improve. Increasing the minimum wage for work will have a positive impact on the financial situation of households, increasing the incomes of employees requiring special protection during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 epidemic
