After years of thinking, Facebook – which owns Instagram – has finally made a decision. The users of both platforms will have the leisure to leave visible or to hide the likes on their publications and on those of the others.
Last month, Instagram and Facebook announced they were launching a pilot project allowing certain users to hide likes counters. The idea was not new, the two social networks plunging on similar projects for several years already.
Following these tests, the group found that some users were won over by this new feature, while others were much less. Never mind, a decision has been made. This Wednesday, Facebook and Instagram announced that all users will soon be able to hide likes on the platforms.
Concretely, this will result in two additional possibilities in the parameters:
- Hide the likes of the publications that appear on your news feed.
- Hide (and therefore hide from others) the likes of your own publications.
Among the users who might fear this new feature are of course the content creators, who rely on their popularity to negotiate paid partnerships.
‘The creators were very divided. Small creators were generally more concerned because they are trying to determine what interests their audience. […] The already established influencers were more open to this idea, because they have less need to prove their worth, ‘explained Adam Mosseri, Instagram boss.
Note that the algorithms will not be affected by this novelty. Already available to many users on Instagram, it will be deployed on Facebook in the coming weeks.
