Research on treatments for malignant brain tumors is expected to gain momentum as Dutch scientists develop a ‘mini brain’ using the brain tissue of aborted fetuses.

According to local media on the 8th (local time), scientists at the Princess Maxima Pediatric Oncology Center in the Netherlands developed a mini brain the size of a grain of rice using brain tissue from aborted fetuses at 12 to 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The mini brain developed this time was aimed at growing the brain in the early and middle stages of development.

According to the scientific community, until now, when trying to grow small organs, embryonic or pluripotent stem cells have been used to grow and clone specific areas of the brain. Through this, the original tissue was broken down into single cells.

Accordingly, the academic world has reportedly been considering using small organs to model malignant brain tumors.

In particular, we focused on how malignant brain tumors develop and grow in children.

With this research, the center plans to determine the feasibility of manufacturing an organ with the same cellular complexity found in the human brain.

The research team discovered that within about 20 to 30 days of dividing and culturing the brain tissue of an aborted fetus, the tissue was reshaped to twice its original size.

Some of the tissues formed in this way were used to model small brain tumors and to research cancer treatments, such as anticancer drug research.

“This new fetal tissue could provide new insights into what shapes the different regions of the brain and what generates cellular diversity,” explained center researcher Dr. Delilah Hendrix.

Scientists agreed to use the brain tissue created this time only for research purposes.

‘Cell’, a scientific journal in the field of biology, commented on the results of this study, saying, “It has become possible to search for treatments for malignant brain tumors,” and “it could revolutionize brain research.”

“Brain organoids extracted from fetal tissue are an invaluable and new tool for studying human brain development,” said Dr. Benedetta Artegiani, co-author of the related paper. “We are able to better understand how the developing brain regulates its cells.” He explained.

According to U.S. health authorities, approximately 16,000 children and adolescents between the ages of 0 and 19 are diagnosed with cancer every year. Of these, 4,000 are diagnosed with brain tumors or spinal cord tumors.

According to the American Cancer Society, brain tumors and spinal cord tumors account for a quarter of childhood cancer cases, and one in four children diagnosed with malignant brain tumors loses their lives.

“We are working to find a solution to malignant brain tumors,” said the Princess Maxima Center. “We believe that successfully developing mini brains will bring us one step closer to a cure.”
