Miners discovered the largest pink diamond in 300 years – Discoveries – Planet – TVNET

As announced in the statement, the new diamond has been dubbed the Lulo Rose – after the Lulo mine in northeastern Angola where the gem was found. Since 2015, the Lulo mine project has discovered 27 diamonds heavier than 100 carats, including the largest diamond found in Angola – the 404-carat February 4 stone, which was sold in 2016 for $16 million. Lulo’s rose is planned to be sold even at a higher price.

Pink diamonds are relatively rare. Scientists are also not quite clear about the phenomenon that gives these gems their pink hue. In 1999, miners in South Africa found a 132-carat pink diamond, dubbed the Pink Star. For nearly two years, experts slowly cut and polished this diamond until they obtained a 59-carat gem. In 2013, it was sold for approximately $83 million, making it the most expensive gemstone ever sold.

Lulo’s rose will also need to be sanded, which could cut its weight in half. However, even if the diamond’s weight is reduced to 85 carats, the special gem could set new value records.
