MinEducación approved Specialization in Internal Medicine at UNIMAGDALENA

With this achievement, the Alma Mater is the second public university in the Caribbean region to have a medical-surgical specialty.

Magdalena University took a big step in the comprehensive training of medical professionals, after the Ministry of National Education granted it qualified registration for a period of seven years for the Specialist Program in Internal Medicine in face-to-face mode in town of Santa Marta.

Dr. Ángela Romero Cárdenas, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Alma Mater, described this important achievement for the Institute as a milestone. “Congratulations, we are celebrating our first surgical specialty in Internal Medicine; It is a milestone for our Institute and the region, as it is the first in the Region and the second in the Caribbean region in public universities.”

The active participation of the faculty of the Medicine Program in this area and the working groups with professionals from different institutions was of great importance in the construction of the special document.

“We work hand in hand with the organizations with which we have a teaching service agreement, such as Julio Méndez Barreneche Hospital, La Milagrosa Clinic, among other organizations; It was also important to listen to the voices of our graduates, as well as employers, who understand the need to train medical professionals in one of the basic specialties such as internal medicine,” explained Dean Ángela Romero.

This Program, which will have 194 credits, is aimed at all medical professionals, affecting not only UNIMAGDALENA graduates, but also graduates from other universities in the Region.

Dr. Guillermo Trout Guardiola, professor of the Medicine Program, highlighted the contribution of the Alma Mater to the Department, as it will allow the medical care of the Julio Méndez Barreneche Hospital to be of a high level and quality.

“By obtaining this specialty, graduates have a great opportunity to access the mother specialty of the entire medical pathway; This will give them a good place to grow as a person, academically and socially, and this has a big impact on the area because the quality of the Hospital’s service has improved a lot,” he said.

At the same time, Jamith Ricardo Maestre, who graduated from the Medicine Program at Magdalena University, emphasized the importance of this achievement for the benefit of health professionals.

“The opening of medical-surgical specialties in the country is very complicated and challenging, so there is no doubt that this is a big step for the University. Now we will have the opportunity to stay on our land doing postgraduate studies and not have to emigrate to other cities for training,” he said.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is working on the structure of the main document to start the admission process for specialists in Internal Medicine, to be offered in the first semester in 2025-I, as provided by Ministry of Education.

Likewise, it is progressing in consolidating two new programs such as Pediatrics and Gynecology and Obstetrics which will allow more health professionals to be trained in this House of Higher Studies.
