This fall, meditation made its way into classrooms across New York City. Every student from kindergarten through high school now does two to five minutes of breathing exercises every day. To do this, thousands of teachers have undergone training to put breathing techniques into practice in their classes.
Mindful breathing
Mindful breathing is a tactic that has had positive effects on the mental health of young people in schools around the world. In the New York program, mindful breathing is taught as a secular (i.e. independent of religion) practice to help young people cope with anxiety and stress.
In the United States, more than a third of students reported experiencing poor mental health during the pandemic, and 44% described themselves as constantly sad or hopeless. Source : CDCCenters for Disease Control and Prevention
Breathing calms the nervous system, refocuses us and helps us regain our balance and concentration. It is a valuable, inexpensive tool that has been proven to improve mental health and well-being. – Eric Adams, Mayor of New York
