The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has completed reviewing the studios’ films for a Golden Globe. The result is a surprise that caused displeasure.
Just before Christmas, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association completed its annual review of entries for a Golden Globe Award. The industry magazine ?? Variety ?? then reported exclusively which films and actors changed categories that the studios had actually considered. Now you might think that it’s not so wild, but the HFPA acted exactly as it did last year when «The Farewell» not in the category? Best Film? was allowed to compete. This time it hits “Threatening» by Lee Issac Chung, who plays mostly in Korean. The comparisons to the Oscar winner «Parasite»who won the little golden statue in that very category are obvious.
It is also obvious that the complaints about the classification were not far, because «Minari» is only allowed as? Best International Film? be awarded. The organization’s guidelines state that films in the top category must contain at least 50 percent English-language dialogue. This is where the Golden Globes differ from the Oscars. Many voices in the industry were voiced that this rule should be changed. Lulu Wang, Phil Lord, Celeste Ng and Daniel Dae Kim called for this. “Parasite” suffered the same fate as the multiple nominated film «Pain and Glory».
While “Parasite” is about a Korean family in South Korea, “Minari” is also about a Korean family who, however, immigrate to a small farm in the US state of Arkansas. In front of the camera are actors Steven Yeun and Han Ye-ri, who can continue to be nominated for the awards for best actor and actress.
After the news got out, the director Lulu Wang was very critical. In a tweet, she said she hadn’t seen a more American movie this year. It is a family of migrants who are striving for the American dream in America. One must finally change the old-fashioned rules that characterize the USA as a purely English-speaking country. “Glee” actor Harry Shum Jr pointed out «Inglorious Basterds» by Quentin Tarantino, who has dialogues in German, French and Italian. Shum claimed the ratio to English was 30 to 70 percent ?? with the greater share of non-English language. Nevertheless, the film was nominated for a Golden Globe for best film. Phil Lord even indirectly called for a boycott of the awards ceremony. If the rules are not reconsidered, a Golden Globe boycott is at stake.
