Milton was raging behind the windows – Karo and Sami were just drinking –

When Hurricane Milton approached Florida, Karo Kujanpää left his home and headed to his friends. At home, there were traces of the storm.

As Hurricane Milton approached Florida, Karo Kujanpää headed inland with his family to friends in Tampa.

– Lucky in the accident that we were there, says Kujanpää, who has lived in Florida for about 15 years.

The family spent two nights with a friend in Kujanpää Sami Kallion by. Behind the barred windows, the party felt safe.

In Tampa, the time passed smoothly under the storm, even though the wind wreaked havoc and took the electricity from Kujanpää’s party as well. That didn’t hurt for long either, because the house was powered by electric cars.

– It was rumbling outside, but we were comfortably sheltered inside the house. We cooked and played cards.

The situation was followed on the news and a few beers were taken from time to time.

– I felt a little guilty when we were having fun. It probably wasn’t the same for everyone.

However, they only got short bursts of sleep.

– The wind makes quite a noise too. It rattles and rattles.

Kujanpää’s chihuahua Nikki also slept in a dog dream.

The dog started behaving exceptionally even before leaving for Tampa when the family was packing. Before the evacuation, it was reluctant to go outside, as if it wanted to stay sheltered.

– It clearly dawned on me that everything is not normal now. Animals seem to have an instinct for these things.

Until Nikki the dog, that something special is going on.

Something remained

When Kujanpää returned home on Thursday evening, the hurricane had left its mark on the yard.

An estimated 5–6 meter strips of sheet metal had torn from the carports in the wind. There were at least two dozen palm trees upside down.

Kujanpää’s home did not escape damage either.

When the evacuation order came, the family left in such a hurry that Kujanpää forgot to pull one of the aluminum storm shields on the windows into place.

– That’s how it happened.

The window of the office room had been shattered by the force of the wind.

– There were pieces of glass everywhere. It had come with such force that there are holes in the opposite wall.

It took two to three hours to clean up the fragments.

– It’s a good thing you weren’t there. It could have gone poorly.

Kujanpää was also lucky. There was a cardboard box accidentally left under the window, which was supposed to be thrown away. There happened to be some old cushions in the box that absorbed the water that ran down the wall.

– It was a little lucky that the floors didn’t waver.
