In an interview, Del Ponte bluntly called Putin a “war criminal” and stressed that the issuance of a warrant for his arrest would be an important signal that “investigative work has been carried out.”
She also said that the issuance of such a warrant is “the only tool that exists that allows you to arrest the perpetrator of a war crime and transfer his case to the International Criminal Court.”
At the same time, del Ponte acknowledges that the signed warrant does not necessarily mean that Putin will actually be taken into custody.
“If he stays in Russia, this will never happen. But he will no longer be able to leave his country, and this will be a clear signal that many states are against him,” the former prosecutor said.
Carla del Ponte led investigations into war crimes in Yugoslavia and Rwanda, as well as human rights violations during the war in Syria.
