As King Charles prepares for his coronation on Saturday, an exciting new change has been announced. For the first time in history, the public will be invited to take an active role in the ceremony and swear allegiance to the King. The Archbishop of Canterbury has called on all those watching or listening to the event to join in a “great cry around the nation and around the world of support for the King.” The Homage of the People will replace the traditional Homage of Peers, where a line of hereditary peers knelt to make a pledge to the newly coronated monarch in person. Archbishop Justin Welby will ask “all persons of goodwill in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other Realms and the Territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all”. The pledge reads, “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.” The spokesperson for Lambeth Palace expresses excitement that this is something that can be shared due to technological advances. It is hoped that the “great cry” of support for the King will be heard around the world. During the service, Prince William will perform the Homage of Royal Blood before the Homage of the People, where he will pledge loyalty to his father. The removal of the Homage of Peers is expected to reduce the length of the service, which is estimated to last around two hours.
