Florida’s Monroe County approved an experiment that involves releasing some 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes in the Keys between 2020 and 2021. It is a male mosquito, designed by Oxitec, a UK biotech company. The mosquitoes were altered to mate with the Aedes Aegypti species and produce female offspring that should die in the larval stage. This species transmits diseases such as Zika, dengue, Chikungunya, and yellow fever. For years, residents and organizations have rejected the project because of the damage it could cause to the environment.
