Samsung’s director of mobile division Tae Moon Roh confirmed at the end of July what has long been speculated about: there will be no new Galaxy Note this year. He informed about it just sixteen days before the big August event. According to him, the company preferred to extend the functions of the note to other devices (for more see Don’t expect new Note phones this year, Samsung confirmed).
The global shortage of chips, which also affected the mobile industry, also played a role in this decision. Manufacturers thus have no choice but to prefer some models over others. Specifically, Samsung had to postpone the launch of the Galaxy S21 FE model in this way (for more see The first mobile victim of a lack of chips. Samsung has put off an important model).
However, the portal SamMobile he does not intend to accept the decision of Samsung, he is hoped by the fact that the company informed about the non-introduction of this year’s model, it did not mention the end of the series as such. The portal thus nostalgically recalled last year’s notes, including the top version with the nickname Ultra, and came up with a new idea. Namely, for Samsung to alternate between the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. Next year could introduce a new note, so the new galaxy would be postponed to 2023. In this way, Samsung could keep both flag lines alive – one year would please fans of one, the next the second series.
The idea is interesting, but it is practically unlikely that Samsung would stick to such a strategy. However, this does not change the fact that the portal founded an online petition, which the South Korean manufacturer wants to at least prick to preserve the Galaxy Note series. Respectively, to present its new representative in the first half of next year.
According to the Dutch portal LetsGoDigital the original goal of the petition was to collect 10,000 signatures. This goal was achieved less than 24 hours after its establishment. The target was subsequently increased to 25,000 signatures. The current goal at the time of writing this article was already 50,000, with almost 38.5 thousand people signing the petition. Even if there are hundreds of thousands of signatures, Samsung is not guaranteed to take calls from dissatisfied customers. However, this is how they will at least see that the Galaxy Note line is not indifferent to people.
This year, at the traditional summer event Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung introduced the third generation of folding models Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip instead of the new generation Galaxy Note. And the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the second model outside the Galaxy Note line to support the S Pen stylus. The first is the top Galaxy S21 Ultra introduced in mid-January (for more see It’s supposed to be a substitute for sheet music. We tested how the pen works with the Galaxy S21).
It is the extension of the support of the stylus to other models that can be an imaginary nail in the coffin of the top model line Galaxy Note. At the same time, there is also the price aspect. While current folding models are more affordable than their predecessors, top notes would certainly keep their price. Over time, there could be a situation where Samsung would offer two model lines at virtually similar prices. So far, there have been significant price differences between the Galaxy S, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Z series, so they have targeted different groups of users.
The retention of the Galaxy Note series in Samsung’s portfolio is currently very uncertain. The above-mentioned worldwide shortage of chips, which many manufacturers face Sophie’s choice, has a large share in this. However, it is practically certain that the Galaxy Note 21 model will not appear on the market. Last year, Samsung changed the designation of this model line, the numerical nickname should reflect the year of presentation of the given generation. Therefore, if the notebook were to appear in Samsung’s offer next year, it would most likely bear the designation Galaxy Note 22. It is assumed that, as in the case of last year’s generation, the upcoming one would include two variants: the basic model and the model with the nickname Ultra.
In any case, this would not be the first time that the number line of a note has been interrupted. The history of this series lacks a model with a six at the end. The Galaxy Note 5 introduced in 2015 was followed by the Note 7. The reason for the renumbering was the unification with the generation designation of the Galaxy S series. In 2020, Samsung resorted to the above-mentioned agreement with the year of introduction. generation bearing the number 20 in its name.
