Millions of damage to bank customers due to helpdesk fraud | Financial

According to the TV program Kassa, ING customers in particular have been the victims of this so-called spoofing technique. Of the large banks, only Rabobank is willing to compensate the damage, while clients of ING and ABN Amro pay for the damage themselves.

Fivefold

According to the Dutch Payments Association, reports to the banks about this helpdesk fraud have increased almost fivefold since April, from 60 reports in April to about 300 in July. Spoofing uses internet calling, where the caller can dial the number that the recipient sees on his telephone. The victims thought they were dealing with a real employee of his bank’s helpdesk.

Hundreds of people have been called with the story that strange transactions have been traced to the victim’s account. The scammers suggested to the savers to temporarily transfer their savings to a ‘vault account’. The victims thought they were transferring their money to a safe account opened for them, in reality they transferred all their savings to the account of a ‘cat catcher’.

Spoofingfraude

ING and ABN Amro say they will not compensate damage resulting from spoofing fraud because victims have transferred the money themselves. Rabobank does compensate the damage, according to a spokesperson, because “it seems to the customer as if it really comes from the bank and the identity of the bank is used by the scammer.”

According to NLdigital, trade association for the digital sector, the telecom sector is working to combat the abuse of important telephone numbers through spoofing: “We are in talks with the government, the police, and banks to find solutions together. In addition, together with the government and other sectors, we conduct national public campaigns to alert people to fraud by telephone, whatsapp, text message or email. ”
