The United States has wasted millions of doses of Covid-19 vaccines since the pandemic began, with many more set to be thrown away in the coming weeks and months as they expire, according to a damning new report from ABC News. About 50,000 Americans still get their first dose each day.

The United States has vaccinated only 66.6% of its population against covid-19, the lowest rate among any rich country in the world. In fact, the US ranks 62nd in the world for Covid-19 vaccines, just behind Nepal (66.9%), Sri Lanka (67.4%) and Iran (68.4%), according to Universidad Johns Hopkins.

The ABC News report notes that hard numbers are hard to come by and change every day, but the amount of waste, even when just a ballpark figure, is staggering when you see how difficult it has been for many poorer countries to match. have access to vaccines.

For example, in North Carolina alone, where only 63% of the population have received at least two doses, 1.7 million Covid-19 injections have been wasted. And in Michigan, where only 60.2% of the population has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, another 1.7 million vaccines have been sent to landfills. More than 100,000 more vaccines will expire in Michigan in the next two weeks alone.

And while it’s great that the US has doses to spare for anyone who wants one, it points to the tremendous inefficiencies and waste of the country’s private health care system. The problem, as experts point out, is that once the doses have been delivered to pharmacies and clinics, they cannot be easily diverted to another part of the world that may have people more willing to receive the vaccines.
