The costs for repairing the track between Almelo and Mariënberg in Overijssel could amount to several millions, says Prorail. More than a hundred meters of track at Vroomshoop had to be replaced after asbestos fell. Train traffic was therefore halted for almost two weeks, but was resumed this morning.
The asbestos ended up on the track due to a major fire in an industrial building earlier this month. Asbestos also ended up in the village, with major consequences. For example, a primary school had to close for a few days and local residents were advised not to eat anything from the vegetable garden for the time being. Asbestos particles also caused problems on the railways.
Major operation
A total of 120 meters of double track was replaced. “We have not seen this before,” a spokesperson for the railway manager said RTV East.
A specialist company removed the track, after which a contractor installed the new rails. A test train then drove over the renovated track. “That all went well and this morning the trains were able to run again.”
The costs for repairs run into millions.
No complaints
Although travelers may have been inconvenienced by the work, no complaints have been received, Prorail says. “It is of course also a matter of force majeure. We could not do anything about this at all.”
Cleaning up the asbestos in Vroomshoop will take at least another eight weeks, reports the company responsible for the clean-up operation.
