Millions for housing in Brabant cities, Eindhoven gets the most

Eindhoven receives a very large amount of money from the government to be able to build more homes: 75 million euros for 3160 homes. Over the next three to five years, construction work is to begin in Fellenoord, the center of the city. More than 59 million euros is available for other cities in Brabant.

“Eindhoven is well endowed this round,” says Eindhoven alderman Stijn Steenbakkers. The Eindhoven region was proclaimed Mainport in 2017 and thus came in the same row as the port of Rotterdam and Schiphol airport. Brainport Eindhoven also wanted to add to the fish, in other words money. to further expand that economic top position. “Of course our friends in the Randstad are also important, but so much money going to Brainport Eindhoven is very good.”

The city will also receive 46.2 million euros to tackle traffic jams in the Brainport region. A lot of money is being invested in a regional cycle path network of 100 kilometers. These will become fast cycle paths so that people can get to work or in the city faster.

The money will also go to six ‘mobility hubs’: places where people park their car after which they continue by bicycle or by public transport. “The accessibility of the Brainport region is under pressure. In this way we ensure that there are fewer traffic jams,” says Steenbakkers.

In total, the government is therefore investing more than 121 million regions in the area. “This is really a recognition from the national government that we are simply becoming increasingly important throughout the Netherlands,” says the alderman.
The Mainport status also means that the city needs more living space. “That means that we are very important for the Netherlands from an economic point of view. A lot of people must also be able to live there. That is why we have a priority position over many other regions and we are very happy with that.”

75 million euros from the government is for more than 3,000 homes around the station in Eindhoven. The Fellenoord road will be narrowed to create space. “We are going up because there will mainly be towers. We want to ensure that everyone can live in this area: families, students, social housing and the free sector. We are making a nice mix. And it will be a green residential area.”

The residential towers are intended to give the city more appearance. “It is still quite a flat pancake. With very few towers. This does not belong to a metropolitan region and an economically powerful city. We are going to turn this into a beautiful, urban allure.”

The region itself is also adding money, resulting in an investment of 350 million euros around Eindhoven.
