On September 17, 2020, in the laboratory of the Polytechnic Institute of Reensealer located in the state of New York, a maintenance worker was cleaning when he was disturbed by a noise, a kind of repetitive “beep” which came from from one of the university’s freezers. The maintenance worker then cut the circuit breaker who fed him to continue his cleaning quietly.
This freezer, set at -80 degrees, saw its temperature rise to -30 degrees the next morning. Scientists believe that this change may have caused irreversible damage to the samples placed inside, which represented 20 years of scientific research. The destroyed research focused on photosynthesis, and is presented as “revolutionary” for the development of solar panels.
The damage is estimated at 1 million dollars according to lawyers for the polytechnic institute, which filed a complaint against the cleaning company that employed the maintenance worker. He accuses him of having “failed to train him properly”.
