Million coup: Will Hamilton and Serena Williams join Chelsea?

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and the former tennis world number one Serena Williams have financially supported the British businessman Martin Broughton in the possible purchase of the English football top club Chelsea.

Like Sky Sports reported on Thursday that Hamilton and Williams want to participate in the 75-year-old’s offer with a sum of ten million pounds (11.98 million euros) each. Both athletes have become established investors in the sports scene in recent years. Nevertheless, at least Hamilton’s interest is somewhat surprising, because the 37-year-old is actually a fan of local rivals Arsenal.

A spokesman for Hamilton confirmed the commitment of the British racing driver, but described the sums mentioned as inaccurate. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, is already a co-owner of Los Angeles’ newly formed women’s soccer team Angel City FC.

The Champions League winners from London are up for sale after Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was forced to cede control of the club amid sanctions imposed on him over the aggressive war in Ukraine. The consortium led by Broughton, former Liverpool CEO, includes World Athletics Federation President Sebastian Coe and other investors who want to protect Chelsea’s status as a top club.

Other bidders for the billionaire Premier League club are an investor group led by Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers, and a consortium led by Steve Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics and Atalanta Bergamo.
