Millennial spends 1,500 euros on ‘vegetarian snacks and hip coffees’ | NOW

Millennials, people born between 1981 and 2000, spend an average of 1,512 euros a year on eating and drinking outside the home. That is considerably more than older generations. Baby boomers do not go further than 519 euros. This is the conclusion of a study by FoodService Institute Netherlands (FSIN) on Sunday.

“Food is a spearhead in their lifestyle for millennials and the Z generation,” says FSIN director Jan-Willem Grievink. The youngest generations prefer to spend the money on hip snacks and drinks. The food is often vegetarian; provide the coffee with oat or soy milk.

“They show how they look in life with food and drink. Where generation X discusses what was on TV, people in their twenties and thirties talk about what they ate or drank and where. That is also shared on social media.” , says Grievink. “They give each other healthy tips and ask whether the other is still eating meat.” According to the director of the FSIN, that is partly only for the stage. “They also eat a lot of fast food, you know.”

Grievink says that chains like McDonald’s also offer more vegetarian options and fewer unhealthy alternatives. “With less salt and fewer unhealthy fats.”

Dutch people increasingly eat outside the home since the economic crisis is over, with the younger generations at the forefront. “It is partly related to economic prosperity, but it is also not the case that young people start making sandwiches with sprinkles in the event of another crisis.”
