MilkLife launches lactose-free “Dare to Drink Milk” campaign

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Global milk producer Dairi Alami or MilkLife on Thursday launched the “Dare to Drink Milk” campaign to invite Indonesians to consume milk regularly and accommodate the needs of lactose intolerance through their products.

“We want everyone to drink milk. That is our goal. In addition to providing milk of international quality, we also conducted a survey of why consumption is low in Indonesia. It turns out that the majority of consumers are lactose intolerant. So to be able to increase milk consumption, we need to present a solution,” said Global CEO Dairi Alami, Ihsan Mulia Putri, during a virtual press conference on Thursday.

Ihsan said that his party made innovations in making lactose-free milk through an enzymatic processing process or adding lactase enzymes to ordinary cow’s milk.

“We innovate, cooperate and bring in technology from abroad to process lactose in fresh milk so that the substance that makes consumers unable to digest lactose has been removed from the milk,” he said.

In line with Ihsan, Dairi Alami’s Global Marketing Manager, Bernadeth Virna Widiastuty, said that many Asian people, including Indonesia, suffer from lactose intolerance.

This condition, continued Virna, occurs because the habit of drinking milk is reduced so that the lactase enzyme in a person’s body is no longer produced. When lactose enters the body through milk, the person is not able to digest milk properly.

“We accommodate the need for lactose intolerance so that they finally start drinking milk because maybe they can’t drink milk all this time or they can be replaced with other drinks. So you don’t have to be afraid if your stomach hurts, then heartburn, or even diarrhea,” he said.

In addition, Virna also believes that the level of milk consumption in Indonesia is still quite low when compared to neighboring countries. According to him, this problem arises because of the limited supply of fresh milk in the country.

“Because the supply of fresh milk is lacking and we have to import it, as a result, the price of milk seems expensive for many people. So usually after children aged five years and over their milk consumption decreases, as adults they don’t even consume milk,” he said.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2020, the average milk consumption in Indonesia is 16.27 kg/capita/year.

This figure is still much lower than the average milk consumption from neighboring countries such as Malaysia which reaches 26.20 kg/capita/year, Myanmar 26.7 kg/capita/year, and Thailand 22.2 kg/capita/year.

Seeing the low consumption of milk in Indonesia, Ihsan hopes that the presence of lactose-free MilkLife can give people the opportunity to drink milk regularly.

“If Indonesians drink milk regularly every day, there will be many benefits and can improve the quality of health and body fitness in daily activities,” said Ihsan.
