The child star drama “Milk” with Stefanie Kolk received the 5,000 euro prize for the best special film at the Crossing Europe Film Festival in Linz. The “fairy garden” (“Fanni Kertje”) by Gergő Somogyvári, which deals with discrimination in Hungary, was honored as the best documentary (also 5,000 euros). The audience award goes to the tragicomedy “Hypnosen” (“The hypnosis”), the first feature film by Swede Ernst De Geer.
“Milk” is the first feature film by Dutch director Stefanie Kolk and is about a woman who collects her breast milk after a stillbirth and, in pain, cannot stop the process or throw away the milk. When she finally decided, against piles of bottles, to give breast milk, it was more difficult than expected. The jury gave a special mention to “The human hibernation”, the directorial debut of the Spanish artist Anna Cornudella Castro, in the feature film category.
In the winning documentary “Fairy Garden”, the Hungarian director Gergő Somogyvári goes with the transient Fanni and the homeless Laci, who – rejected by society and discriminated against by law – the creating a community of convenience. The audience favorite “Hypnosis” is a satirical story about a failed hypnosis therapy that leads a woman to end up smoking instead of ending her nicotine addiction.
The prize in the YAAAS youth track! The Finnish coming-of-age love story “Valoa Valoa Valoa” (“Light Light Light”) by Inari Niemi won. The Local Artist Award went to Daniel Kalkhofer’s film “Marlene” about the Taekwondo fighter Marlene Jahl, who is fighting for a ticket to the Olympics. “Laute Stille” by Lisa Bayr, Lukas Brandstetter and Katharina Arbeithuber received the first ever Crossing Europe Innovation Award, which honors the work of local artists in the field of animation art. Marija Kavtaradze won the 2024 MIOB New Look Award from the festival network Moving Images – Open Borders with “Slow”. The festival will last until Sunday evening.
