Ulm (dpa) – In the Wilhelmsburg barracks in Ulm, command of two international military headquarters will be handed over to General Alexander Sollfrank on Thursday (3 p.m.). As a spokesman for the Bundeswehr announced in Ulm, General Jürgen Knappe will then be retired with a big tattoo (7:00 p.m.).
In 2018, Knappe took over the leadership of the multinational operational command and also commanded the so-called Joint Support and Enabling Command of the NATO defense alliance. The two commands are to support NATO in possible battles and also in logistical operations.
The 55-year-old General Alexander Sollfrank had previously dealt with the principles of command and deployment of the armed forces on behalf of the Bundeswehr Inspector General. Before that, Sollfrank, who was born in Fürth in Bavaria, was, among other things, commander of the special forces command in Calw.
