Agents of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) arrested an Army sergeant for his alleged responsibility in the hunting and smuggling of 126 specimens of “oryzoborus angolensis” in Venezuela, known in the country as “morichaleritos birds”.
As reported by the Public Ministry on Tuesday, the 50-year-old sergeant and another 35-year-old man were arrested. His arrest occurred on March 29, when they were moving the hidden birds inside a truck.
After the discovery, they were questioned about the respective permits for the possession of these species, to which they replied that they did not have any mobilization guide. Consequently, both were apprehended and were placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry, the Prosecutor’s Office indicated.
The two men were brought before a court, accused of “illegal hunting, increased penalty and aggravated smuggling.” For these crimes they will remain in prison in the Monagas state (northeast), awaiting trial.
Last February, two men and a woman were arrested, also in Monagas, for hunting and smuggling 413 similar birds.
The Venezuelan Observatory of Environmental Human Rights (OVDHA) warned, in May 2022, that in the country there is “an accelerated loss of biological diversity.” The situation could affect the violation of the fundamental guarantees of rural and indigenous populations.
The observatory presented a report in which it indicated that this loss is related to several causes; Among them, the increase in the human population, the disappearance of habitats, pollution and hunting pressure.
