The volcanic archipelago is located between Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russia. Some of the islands were occupied by the Soviet Union after World War II.
Tokyo believes that four Kuril islands belong to Japan. Russia withdrew this week from peace negotiations with Japan about the future of the islands.
This happened because of the sanctions Japan has also imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

According to the Russians, 3,000 troops took part in the exercise. Where exactly this happened in the Kuril Islands was not disclosed.
Japanese media report that the exercises took place exactly on the islands disputed by Japan. Tokyo does not speak of the Kuril Islands, but of the Northern Territories.
