Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has authorized the deployment of the Armed Forces to guarantee the voting and counting of votes in the municipal elections in October 2024, the Official Gazette reported on September 9.
According to the decree, “the places and period of use of the Armed Forces will be defined in accordance with the terms of the request of the Superior Electoral Court.”
On October 6, 155.9 million voters in 5,569 Brazilian municipalities will go to the polls to elect mayors, deputy mayors and council members.
The figure represents an increase of 5.4 percent compared to the 2020 elections.
In municipalities with more than 200,000 voters where no mayoral candidate obtains more than half of the valid votes in the first round, a second round will be held on October 27.
The decree was signed by Lula da Silva, the Minister of Defense José Múcio Monteiro and the Minister in charge of the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcos Antonio Amaro dos Santos.
