Military Coup Breaks in Sudan, PM Hamdok Arrested

KHARTOUM – Military coup reportedly broke out in Sudan , Monday (10/25/2021). Prime Minister (PM) Abdalla Hamdok and four ministers from the interim government were arrested by the military.

Quotes Reuters, PM Hamdok is currently under house arrest.

The coup took place amid demonstrations by pro-military and pro-civilian demonstrators.

television station Al-Hadath reported groups supporting the military and supporters of Sudan’s interim government have clashed in recent days.

In addition to the four ministers, there was one high-ranking civilian official who was also arrested by the military on Monday morning.

Reuters, citing family sources as saying that the military officers raided PM Hamdok’s house. The Sudanese leader was later placed under house arrest.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, the group that spearheaded protests for civilian rule last year, urged its supporters to take to the streets to show fierce resistance to what it described as a “brutal military coup.”

“We call on the masses to take to the streets and occupy them, block all roads with barricades, go on general strikes, not cooperate with rebels, and confront them with civil disobedience,” the group said in a statement on Facebook.
