Despite the war, thousands of Ukrainians are returning home from abroad, and in the region of the western city of Lviv alone, 19,000 people have crossed the border in 24 hours, regional military commander Maxim Kozitsky said on Facebook, DPA reported.
This means that more Ukrainians entered the country than 14,000 left. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 556,000 people have returned to the country, Kozitsky wrote.
More than 1.3 million Ukrainians have fled their homeland through the Lviv region.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 4.02 million people have fled abroad since the Russian invasion began.
Not all have left the country, some have sought protection in non-combat regions.
Kozicki also wrote that 276,000 had fled to the Lviv region.
