“Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Shedding Shame and Growing Up in Vogue Interview”

Miley Cyrus has carried a sense of shame with her for years, as she regularly caused controversy in the media. The singer now realizes that she was judged harshly by adults, she says Vogue.

Cyrus looks back on the period when she was in the news a lot, because she was twerking on stage and sitting half-naked on a wrecking ball in a music video. “I’m not someone who is looking for attention, now as a thirty-year-old woman,” she says. “At the time, I was creating attention for myself because I was trying to distance myself from a character,” she says, referring to the Hannah Montana character she played for Disney for many years.

Cyrus says she wanted to prove herself, just like any 20-year-old who wants to show that they are not the same as their parents. “I have carried shame for years for the controversy and angry reactions I caused. Now that I am an adult, I realize how harshly I was dealt with. I was harshly criticized as a child by adults. Now I realize that I was a child would never treat you like that.”

The singer says that growing up has also meant that she thinks better about what she wants, instead of making others happy. That also means that she will not go on tour for the time being and will perform less. “Singing in front of hundreds of thousands of people is not what I really like. There is no connection. There is no security.”

“After my last concert series in 2014, I started seeing touring more as a question. And I can’t. And it’s not just that I can’t, because it’s not just about what I’m capable of, but where I desire. And do I want to live my life for the pleasure of someone other than myself?”
