The tumultuous Miley Cyrus
Former muse of Disney studios, Miley Cyrus’ career has taken a very surprising turn when she rebelled against the parent company, before moving on to something much more “punk” and liberated. And today we’re talking about one of these hits, maybe even the biggest of his career: “Flowers”, released in 2023, on the album “Endless Summer Vacation”. A song for which the singer is accused of plagiarism!
A plagiarism of Bruno Mars?
It was an American production company, Tempo Music Investments, which decided to take the matter to court in accusing Miley Cyrus of plagiarism for her hit “Flowers”. The singer is not the only one accused, since her co-songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack are also accused. The company claims that The singer took too much inspiration from Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” to create his own track. It should be noted that Bruno Mars has not spoken out on this matter and has no connection with the complaint by Tempo Music Investments.
“It is undeniable, given the combination and the number of similarities between the two pieces, that “Flowers” would not exist without “When I Was Your Man”explain the plaintiffs. The accusation focuses in particular on “the opening vocal line of the chorus of “Flowers” which begins and ends on the same chords”. It is true that there are even similarities in the lyrics, since both songs talk about buying flowers. The plaintiffs therefore want Miley Cyrus to stop singing this song on stage.
The complaint is unlikely to go very far, however, because as Billboard explains, “Not only are there no direct samples or obvious interpolations between ‘Flowers’ and ‘When I Was Your Man,’ but there are also no sonic overlaps – no obvious shared melodies or rhythms, no major similarities in production textures. The only similarities, then, are in the songs’ lyrics, which are not identical, but share elements and ideas.”. We’ll let you be the judge!
