Milestone for a children’s clinic: varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst certified by the German Geriatrics Association for the first time | Varisano

The children’s clinic at the varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst was certified as a DDG diabetes center at the end of July. With this certificate, the German Diabetes Association (DDG) honors clinics and practices for their high quality in the treatment of diabetes. The focus is, among other things, on staff qualifications, the achievement of several diabetes-specific performance characteristics and clear treatment and referral guidelines.

Daniel Lorenz, one of the two main physicians at the Höchst Children’s Clinic, is happy that his team’s commitment is now officially confirmed. “When I met Dr. When Crísdean Meudt took up the position of senior physician at the children’s clinic, one of my goals was to determine our diabetes treatment. It’s great to now see it officially confirmed that our team’s dedication is paying off.” To obtain the certification, a pediatric nurse, among others, went through additional training to become a certified diabetes counselor. Dr. Lorenz himself is a DDG diabetologist.

At the varisano Klinikum Frankfurt Höchst, young patients with diabetes are not only treated as inpatients. The hospital in western Frankfurt also has an outpatient authorization clinic so they can provide outpatient care to those affected and their families. Daniel Lorenz explains: “Sometimes children and young people are cared for by ‘adult diabetologists’. But children are not small adults. In the best case scenario, pediatricians should care. “

If young patients with diabetes need to go to the Höchster Hospital due to another illness or injury, Lorenz and his diabetes team are available to advise the specialized colleagues being treated, as large changes in blood sugar levels can occur during operations, for example

Around 500 children and teenagers with diabetes are being cared for throughout Frankfurt. Lorenz and his team look after more than 100 of them in their diabetes outpatient clinic. They see great progress in the development of sensors and pumps that now communicate with each other, measure insulin requirements automatically and then deliver the necessary amount.

“There is no need for regular dosing with spikes and subsequent injections and most patients accept this source. This also largely eliminates the risk of low blood sugar. But despite all the progress in medicine and medical technology: the diagnosis of diabetes is still a big change in family life. It is therefore important for us that we not only advise and support the children and young people themselves, but also their parents and siblings,” says DDG diabetes consultant Eva Würth. “To keep the risk of resulting damage to a minimum, it is essential that the patient and their family participate. Touching can happen from time to time, especially as we grow up. Some young people no longer want to have the pump by their side as a constant companion. Even then, we are there to advise you and your parents,” says diabetes consultant and dietitian Maureen Welther. The children’s clinic team can help at various levels. Because it’s not just doctors, diabetes consultants and nursing staff with diabetes knowledge. Instead, the children receive comprehensive care from physiotherapists, social workers and psychologists.

The “DDG Diabetes Center” seal is valid for three years, after which the clinic must re-certify that it meets DDG’s strict criteria.

background
Diabetes is the No. 1 widespread disease in Germany: more than six million people are affected. Because the disease is very complex, each patient needs a treatment that is specific to them. Diabetes often causes no symptoms at first, but if left untreated it can lead to serious complications. Because more blood sugar damages small and large vessels. It can lead to stroke or heart attack, kidney disease, amputation or blindness. These problems can be avoided through good medical care. Successful diabetes treatment requires experienced and knowledgeable staff, both specialists, diabetologists and diabetes counselors and assistants. The “DDG Diabetes Center” seal guarantees that the facility has this level of certification.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, type 1 diabetes affected more than 30,000 children and young people in Germany in 2019. In this case, the immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. About 3,500 children and young people become ill every year. There has been a slight increase in the rate of new cases over the past few years. This is based on data from the national diabetes patient progress documents and regional diabetes registries.

Type 2 diabetes is very rare in children and adolescents. This makes it more difficult to absorb the insulin produced in the body. According to the Robert Koch Institute, approximately 200 young people develop type 2 diabetes each year; around 1,000 young people between the ages of 11 and 17 are affected.

Overweight and obesity, physical inactivity and smoking during childhood and adolescence increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
