The Nobel Prize for Medicine goes to two researchers who have developed an mRNA vaccine against corona. Not only do they receive recognition for their work, but they can also distribute a sum of 950,000 euros.
Researchers Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman have won the important prize.
“They contributed to the unprecedented pace of vaccine development during one of the greatest public health threats in modern times,” the organization behind the Nobel Prize wrote.
The winners receive 950,000 euros, a medal and a diploma.
What is an mRNA vaccine?
So-called mRNA vaccines ensure that your immune system is trained with a small, harmless piece of the coronavirus. That part is not in the vaccine, but the recipe for making it is. Your body produces this piece itself after your injection.
The corona vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are mRNA vaccines.
Winners in other categories will follow soon
The awards ceremony is on December 10. That is the anniversary of the death of the Swede Alfred Nobel, after whom the prizes are named.
The Nobel Prize for Medicine is traditionally the first category for which the winner is announced.
The Nobel Prizes for Physics (Tuesday), Chemistry (Wednesday), Literature (Thursday), Peace (Friday) and Economics (next Monday) will also follow in the coming days.
The discoveries by Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman – awarded the 2023 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine – were critical for developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020.
