Milan’s Victory Keeps Champions League Ambitions Alive

Under pressure, Milan grabbed the victory the club needed to keep their CL ambitions alive. Last season’s semi-finalist started the evening on two points, but after 90 minutes of football the number jumped to five.

It happened after a solid comeback. Rafael Leão scissor-kicked in 1-1 minutes after PSG’s lead early in the match, and after the break the eternal Giroud used his head to make it 2-1.

The Frenchman rose to the air in the 50th minute and was overwhelmingly superior in the aerial duel with the visitors’ goalscorer Milan Skriniar. Shortly after, PSG were reduced to ten men (two yellow cards for Lucas Hernandez).

With the score 1-1 before the break, PSG striker Ousmane Dembélé hit the crossbar with a finish from 20 metres.

Deed

The result at San Siro was exactly what Newcastle needed after the 0-2 loss away to Borussia Dortmund a few hours earlier. The Premier League team dropped to last place with their four points, but the hope of advancement was nevertheless strengthened.

No one in Group F can feel confident about further games in the most prestigious European Cup after the New Year. Dortmund are best placed with seven points with two rounds remaining, while PSG are on six.

This is how the rush in what many people refer to as the “group of death” after the draw:

28/11: Milan – Borussia Dortmund, PSG – Newcastle

13/12: Borussia Dortmund – PSG, Newcastle – Milan.

New smell

Newcastle have a big job ahead of them after two straight losses to Dortmund. Two weeks ago, the English fell 0-1 at home at St. James’ Park.

On Tuesday, Niclas Füllkrug and Julian Brandt became the goal heroes in Dortmund’s own great room. The Germans took the lead in the 26th minute after an attack in which Füllkrug was central throughout. He knocked the ball into the roof of the net on a ball from Marcel Sabitzer.

A perfect counterattack made it 2-0 towards the end of the match. Brandt was given plenty of room to run in and safely controlled the ball behind Nick Pope.

Newcastle were second best before the break. Before the second half, manager Eddie Howe took action and made a double substitution with Miguel Almirón and Anthony Gordon coming on. The English visitors rose, but found no way back into the match.

Joelinton came closest when, after just under an hour, he got the head of Tino Livramento’s cross from the right. The ball went wide of the far post.

Julian Ryerson played the whole match in the Dortmund defence. Earlier in the day, as expected, he was selected for Ståle Solbakken’s Norwegian national team.
