Milan confirm: Zlatan has undergone surgery

On Wednesday, Milan announce that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has undergone surgery on his left knee, with which he has had major problems during the season. The Milan club says that the operation, which was performed by doctors Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet in Lyon, France had been planning for some time.

According to Milan, the operation was successful and the prognosis is now that the 40-year-old is expected to be out of action for seven to eight months. The Serie A club explains that the operation was performed to treat an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.

Yesterday, Tuesday, Italian media reported that Ibrahimovic decided to play on, if an upcoming medical examination shows that he does not need to undergo surgery. Now the Swede has been forced to undergo surgery, which puts a big question mark around his future playing career.

However, according to Calciomercato journalist Daniele Longo, who follows Milan closely, Ibrahimovic has not changed his mind about his future despite the operation: he wants to continue playing.

After Milan secured Scudetton on Sunday, Zlatan himself spoke about his future in one interview with TV4:

– I will not go into the details now. The details will come out soon and then I can talk about it. Now we will enjoy the win. Just enjoy, Ibrahimovic said then.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s current contract expires in June. However, Milan’s club management believes that the forward can continue to contribute to the team on the pitch, tuttomercatoweb.com has previously claimed. According to the site has the club has therefore chosen to offer the Swede a contract extension which he must take a position on.

On 20 April 2017, Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered a serious knee injury in connection with a Europa League match with Manchester United. The Swede was then operated on in the USA by surgeon Freddie Fu, who managed to save the 40-year-old’s career.

In September 2021, Fu passed away after a short illness, after which he was highly praised by Ibrahimovic.

“Freddie Fu gave me a second chance in my career. I’m still on top thanks to him. I owe him everything. Thank you Freddie Fu. Rest in peace,” Zlatan wrote on Twitter then.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has played in Milan since returning to the club from the LA Galaxy in January 2020.
