The new factory, where the coffee will be roasted by wind, is located in Turnhout and should be ready in 2 to 3 years. The German company Probat will be responsible for building the roasting plant.

“There are already small burners that work on electricity,” says Frans Van Tilborg, CEO of the Miko group (Michielsen Koffie, ed.). “Such burners are much more common on an industrial scale, and certainly not on wind energy. We are definitely the first in this. ”

The energy management system between the windmill and the burner is very complex. This is because the oven does not always need to be warm when the wind is blowing hard. Thanks to a system based on artificial intelligence, the oven should be able to roast several tons of coffee per hour. In the long term, the new burner could run on hydrogen.

“We are currently in great demand for burners running on alternative energy sources,” said Van Tilborg. “We want to prove that green energy is also an option for high-capacity coffee roses.”
