Miķelis Golts was born on December 25, 1922 in the village of Nida, parish of Rucava, in the family of a fisherman. In general, during his lifetime, the painter left a significant artistic legacy. He is known for painting with his own developed technique, in which textures are of great importance: Miķelis Golt’s paintings are distinguished by the created relief, the free and impulsive way of applying paint and the plasticity of the working surface. For the texture of the painting, paints, beach sand and shells were used, as well as other ingredients known only to the artist. The artist has carefully hidden the recipe of his original technique, and it has not yet been revealed.
Miķelis Golts painted mostly at night. Taking into account the special painting technique, the works were made on canvas or cardboard in a lying position on a wood stove in the kitchen or on a billiard table, produced during the free state of Latvia in the 20th century. in the 30s.
In 1989 Miķelis Golts bought a house in Liepāja, Fr. at 26 Brīvzemnieka Street, to restore it, create an exhibition hall for his paintings, as well as organize social events for artists and cultural workers. The “Pie Miķeļa” house was opened to the public for the last time on May 14, 2022, during the international “Night of Museums” campaign.
During the life of the painter, since 1947, more than 24 solo exhibitions were held, as well as several memorial exhibitions in the Liepāja Museum, which took place after the artist’s death: “Sibīrijas atbalss” (2008), “Miķelis Golts. Extraordinary Liepāja” (2013).
Mičelis Golt’s works have been exhibited in the United States, Italy, Japan, Russia and Sweden. The artist’s paintings are in the fund of the Union of Artists of Latvia, in state and municipal museums, including the Liepāja Museum, as well as in private collections in Latvia and abroad.
The painter died at his home “Pie Miķeļa” in Liepāja on April 23, 2007, buried in Liepāja Central Cemetery.
