Mikel Merino is now a new Arsenal player, as the London club has just announced. After several weeks of intense negotiations, the midfielder leaves Real Sociedad to sign as a gunner until 2028 in exchange for 32 million euros plus another 5 in variables, according to Fabrizio RomanoHis market value of €50 million makes him the most sought-after player to leave the Anoeta club in its history.
Mikel Merino’s time at San Sebastian is now a thing of the past. After more than 240 games (27 goals, 30 assists) and lifting the Copa del Rey, the Pamplona native is embarking on his second spell in the Premier League, having previously played for Newcastle United.
As things stand, his transfer to Arsenal is the third highest for Real Madrid, only surpassed by Alexander Isak’s departure to Newcastle and Robin Le Normand’s to Atlético, and equalled by the departures of Iñigo Martínez, Álvaro Odriozola and Asier Illarramendi. In fact, if the different variables stipulated in the agreement are met, Merino would become the second highest.
In any case, it so happens that two of the three biggest sales of Real Sociedad have taken place in the current market. In addition to the sale of Le Normand to Atlético for 34 million, there is also that of Merino to Arsenal.
On the other hand, Merino’s signing is the third that the team coached by Mikel Arteta has made this summer, with an outlay that is above 100 million euros.
